Recapping My HRB Experience

Accepting my internship with HRB in March, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but knew I was going to get a chance to work with a variety of organizations. And that is exactly what I got to do. I worked with large organizations, small organizations and nonprofits. Some were in the service industry others were in consumer goods industries. However, the biggest thing I learned was the importance of research and having knowledge of the client’s organization and industry.

Through my nearly five months interning at HRB, I had a chance to dabble in many different things. I worked on many different proposals with various people throughout the office. Wrote numerous press releases and blog posts and even a whitepaper on Pinterest. Met with clients. Monitored media coverage for our clients. Plus, I got to start a HRB Pinterest page and run our social media (make sure you ‘Like Us’ or ‘Follow Us’to stay up to date on the happenings around HRB).

Getting to be hands on the entire time is something I really appreciated, my opinion was valued, I got to revise proposals and releases, participate in meetings, and give ideas to different projects. I was often asked, “Do you have any questions? Any answers?” While I many times said “no” to both questions, it showed me that they wanted me to be thinking and speak up.

And it wasn’t all work:

  • Figured out how to stump Steve in Friday trivia afternoon which led Dianne to success.
  • Discovered the similarities between coaching and PR.
  • Learned what “over-the-air” meant and how it could save me money. Being on a tight college student budget, it was a great thing to learn.
  • Realized how much Iowa has to offer to tourists.
  • Listened to hilarious commentary of raising a baby.

But my red pen has run out of ink and my notepads are out of paper, so I better head back to the University of Iowa to finish my final year as an MBA student.

I would like to thank HRB for all the people I got to work with and the amount of experience I gained.
